Personal Branding Photography in Miami: A Session with April Sabral

It was such a pleasure and an honor to photograph leadership expert April Sabral. Through our connection at the Miami Business Council, we had talked about working together for a while. With her busy schedule, finding the right date took some coordination—but we finally made it happen.

What followed was two hours of conversation, laughter, four wardrobe changes, and the opportunity to capture the qualities April wanted people to see.

Starting with How You Want to Be Seen

Before every branding or headshot session, I ask a simple question: What do you want your photographs to communicate?

April shared four words: trustworthy, authentic, confident, and natural.

Those words became the starting point for our session, informing everything from the studio selection to wardrobe, lighting, and direction. A personal branding photograph introduces you before you have the chance to introduce yourself. I want that introduction to feel true to who you are.

April also shared that previous photography experiences hadn’t always been positive and that being in front of the camera could feel awkward. That conversation mattered just as much as the words she chose. Understanding how someone feels about being photographed helps me create an experience where they can feel supported.

Choosing the Right Miami Studio

I had a feeling April would enjoy a Miami studio with several natural light options. The space gave us the flexibility to explore different settings while keeping the atmosphere relaxed and comfortable.

Choosing a location is part of my creative process. I consider the person, the feeling we want to convey, and how the surroundings will work with their wardrobe. For April, natural light felt especially aligned with the authentic, approachable presence she wanted her images to communicate.

Styling Is Part of the Story

Before the shoot, April and I worked together on a wardrobe consultation. She arrived with four looks, giving us variety across the two-hour session.

My fashion background is an essential part of what I bring to personal branding photography. I understand fashion as a visual language.

Color, texture, fit, and silhouette all influence how a photograph feels. Clothing can communicate confidence, warmth, creativity, or authority—and the choices should reflect the person wearing it.

Styling is part of my process because those details matter. I consider how clothing photographs, how it moves, and how it works with the light and setting. Just as importantly, I want my clients to feel comfortable in what they’re wearing. That comfort carries into their posture, expression, and presence.

Finding Comfort in Front of the Camera

After 20 years of photographing people, I know how much trust goes into stepping in front of a camera. Even someone who leads, speaks publicly, or connects easily with others can feel self-conscious when the lens turns toward them.

I always let my clients know that directing them is my job. They can arrive as they are, take a breath, and let me guide them through the rest.

Throughout April’s session, I offered direction on posing, movement, and expression while leaving room for conversation and spontaneous moments. We laughed, worked through her different looks, and let the session unfold.

Within the first 20 to 30 minutes, I could see her settling in. Her guard began to drop, and more of her personality came through. Those shifts are one of my favorite parts of this work: the relaxed shoulders, the unguarded smile, the moment someone begins to enjoy being photographed.

The Best Feedback

Afterward, April left me a wonderful review. She shared how surprised she was by how much fun she had and how happy she was with the photographs, especially given how awkward she usually feels in front of the camera.

That meant so much to me. Helping someone who typically dislikes being photographed enjoy the experience—and feel excited about their images—is deeply rewarding.

April, thank you for your trust, your openness, and such a lovely afternoon together.
