Inbox Full — Portraits of the Pandemic

In the backyard of the nation’s capital, Washington area locally run businesses are using every ounce of their creativity to stay alive. Violetta investigates these subjects by capturing the essence of their spirit with powerful portraits alongside their closed businesses.
The importance of illustrating the mental health of small business owners during the COVID-19 pandemic came to her through meditation, which has become a fundamental practice in dealing with uncertain and fear-provoking times. How have fellow small business owners and entrepreneurs been coping with the struggle to save their business in the midst of this pandemic? She observes how each owner tackles daily survival from filling out numerous grant applications to fully pivoting their business model to survive.
Each portrait, along with uncensored recorded audio interviews bring to life the person, their emotions, and their fortitude to keep their business alive.
From Violetta’s perspective, these brave, resilient people are heroes in our communities.
